Essential OSINT reading for this week.

Building your information position on OSINT is essential when you are in the OSINT world. In Ready, Research, Read I shall share on a weekly basis one or two titles that I consider very worth while reading, based on working in OSINT since 1990. Let me know your thoughts.

Unlocking the value of open-source intelligence (OSINT) for customs enforcement : study report . – Belgium : World Customs Organization , 2024 . – 44 p.
Refs.

This Study Report is aimed at senior management in Customs administrations who are interested in examining the possibility of introducing OSINT into their enforcement practices. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive review of how WCO Member Customs administrations can unlock the value of OSINT. Since OSINT is a very young discipline, and relatively few Customs administrations have started leveraging its value, this Study Report should be considered as a step towards laying the foundation of OSINT in Customs enforcement.

Kolva, Dan
Open source intelligence for counterterrorism / Kolva, Dan ; D. Whitney : Mitre , 2024 . – 1-13 p. . – (intelligence after next ; 27)

An Open source Intelligence (OSINT) approach to counterterrorism (CT), particularly foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs), has not been widely adopted by counterterrorism analysts in the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). Such an approach would be a transformative shift from the current status quo. Analysts have done this work for decades using predominately IC-only closed systems in Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities. However, embracing big data and the tools that harness these data will likely help the CT community in a resource-constrained environment.

Remember, OSINT is a very broad and general concept that applies to many different areas. That explains why there are so many different definitions and visions. It is up to you to derive what is useful in your own environment.
