Ready, research, read (8)

Essential OSINT reading for this week.

Building your information position on OSINT is essential when you are in the OSINT world. In Ready, Research, Read I shall share on a weekly basis one or two titles that I consider very worth while reading, based on working in OSINT since 1990. Let me know your thoughts.

Open source intelligence opportunities and challenges : a review / Szymoniak, Sabina ; Foks, Kacper . – In: Advances in Science and Technology Research Journal , 2024

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is a collection of tools and methods for extracting information from publicly available sources. It helps verify the accuracy and authenticity of information, as seen in the FBI’s 2020 investigation of a Philadelphia woman involved in protests and preparing precise attacks like spear phishing. In this manuscript, we present an up-to-date overview of research that uses open-source methods and techniques. We will concentrate on the tools and methods advancing the cybersecurity industry. Studying the manuscript of OSINT opportunities and challenges can help readers understand the state of the art in theory and practice. We will also highlight the future directions and requirements for OSINT methods and the newly designed tools using these methods

Open Source Intelligence : the way ahead / Ungureanu, Ganbriel-Traian . – In: Journal of Defense Resources Management , 2021

The technological advances have led to an exponential growth in the amount and complexity of open-source information. The weight of this type of information in the collection base has significantly increased and now we have intelligence services that collect more than 80% of their intelligence from open sources. Therefore, in this article, referring to state-of-the-art technologies in an exhaustive approach, we analyze how the new technologies sustain the intelligence services in their actions for collecting open-source intelligence and increase the efficiency of related processes. Moreover, we analyze how these technologies can supplement and enhance one another throughout the phases of intelligence cycle to render the intelligence services’ activity more efficient. Finally, analyzing the historical progresses, we will foretell what technologies are expected to support OSINT in the next ten years and how they will be integrated into the phases of intelligence cycle, forecasting how OSINT will advance through technological change.

Remember, OSINT is a very broad and general concept that applies to many different areas. That explains why there are so many different definitions and visions. It is up to you to derive what is useful in your own environment.
