Ready, research, read (6)

Essential OSINT reading for this week.

Building your information position on OSINT is essential when you are in the OSINT world. In Ready, Research, Read I shall share on a weekly basis one or two titles that I consider very worth while reading, based on working in OSINT since 1990. Let me know your thoughts.

A burning need to know : the use of open source intelligence in the fire service / Thomas A. Robson. – Monterey CA : Naval Postgraduate school, 2009
Thesis. ”This thesis seeks to assist local fire departments in building systems and training personnel to exploit open source intelligence for their unique needs. Using information gleaned from interviews with experienced intelligence people, the intelligence cycle is discussed including requirements, collection, analysis, and dissemination in light of the needs of the fire service.’

OSINT done right / Steele, Robert David , 2016
Briefing presented in April 2016 to the military, police and national intelligence services of Denmark, in Denmark. Also available on Youtube. “Even today, I think this is still a problem in most ‘modern’ intelligence staffs. People think that simply collecting open source info – although now from a wider range of sources – is OSINT, when I say it is not. It’s like collecting satellite pictures and calling them IMINT … the job isn’t done until they are analyzed and an assessment made. “

Remember, OSINT is a very broad and general concept that applies to many different areas. That explains why there are so many different definitions and visions. It is up to you to derive what is useful in your own environment.
